Massage is a great way to relieve muscle pain and tension. Muscles are dependent upon oxygen. When you run so fast that you become out of breath there is no longer enough oxygen available for the muscle to burn. The body then begins to burn sugar anaerobically. Continue to exercise at a high level, and pyruvic acid accumulates in the muscle. This becomes a waste material called lactic acid. Lactic acid occurs when exercise becomes anaerobic, and pain and soreness result. This syndrome is not only the result of strenuous exercise, it also occurs under periods of stress and tension and due to poor posture. When the movement of muscles is restricted, lactic acid can build up, causing soreness. So even though you may not be running you might be shrugging your shoulders to your ears or "playing turtle" for a length of time wich cause your shoulder muscles to become anaerobic or oxygen exhausted and feel sore due to the lack of blood flow, like when people do computer work or driving on a busy highway.
There is not yet enough definitive research to prove that the application of massage alone removes lactic acid. We do know however, that massage is an excellent tool for relieving sore muscles that have lactic acid build up.
Massage activates the large touch and sensation nerve fibers, which can override pain impulses sent out by smaller pain fibers. So, while massage may not get rid of the cause (lactic acid), it does alleviate the pain. In addition, massage can stimulate circulation to help remove lactic acid. As the soreness eases, muscles move more freely. This added mobility helps the body heal more rapidly.
Because massage helps remove lactic acid and metabolic wastes, it is extremely important to drink plenty of water, at least two quarts, in the 24 hour period following massage to flush these waste materials from the body. Otherwise, a toxic headache could result.
